Caring for our Animals

Eight veterinarians and some 80 full-time staff care for the health, well-being and humane research use of ONPRC's 3,600 nonhuman primates.

As members of the Division of Animal Resources (DAR), they provide around-the-clock veterinary care; operate a veterinary clinic, and clinical pathology, histopathology and virus diagnostic labs; staff a surgery unit; and manage a breeding program that includes the largest specific pathogen-free colony of rhesus monkeys in the country. Primarily, these dedicated personnel take care of the monkeys.

Each member of the DAR staff plays an essential role in working with the seven members of a special team implementing the center's plan for promoting the psychological well-being of those monkeys. In addition, staff members care for a colony of aging rhesus monkeys, operate a primate tissue distribution program, maintain the cleanliness of up-to-date animal housing facilities, seek grants for expanded and newer animal housing, and conduct training and certification programs.
